VCA Baseball Wins Opener at Covenant Christian

Demotte, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions defeated the Covenant Christian Knights 15-6 in its 2011 opener on Tuesday night.  Calvin Reisinger started for the Lions (1-0) and pitched four solid innings before giving way to Justin Reisinger with one out in the 5th.

The Lions tallied three runs in the opening frame highlighted by Justin Reisinger's 2-run inside the park home run.  The Knights scored single runs in the first and second inning bringing the score to 3-2.  A Peter Guess single and Justin Reisinger double put runners at first and third with no outs in the top of the third inning, but the Knights' Bowers was able to get two strikeouts and a soft grounder to end the threat.

The Knights brought in Dexter to pitch in the top of the 5th, and VCA promptly responded with four runs.  The Knights fought back with four runs in the bottom of the inning capped by Dexter's 3-run home run.

The Knights brought in their second  baseman Patton to pitch in the sixth inning and it was all Lions from there on out.  Five hits and eight runs later, VCA had a 15-6 lead that would hold up for the final tally.

VCA next plays at LaLumiere in LaPorte on Tuesday, April 5 at 4:30.

VCA Lions Baseball Look To Improve On Their 2010 Campaign

Valparaiso, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions baseball team expect that experience and greater depth will allow them to improve upon their inaugural 3-13 mark from last year. The Lions open their 23 game schedule on March 29th at Covenant Christian High School in Demotte, IN. Highlights on the Lions' schedule include conference games against Portage Christian (Portage, IN) and Granger Christian (Granger, IN) plus dates against Bowman Academy (Gary, IN), Kouts High School (Kouts, IN), LaLumier (LaPorte, IN) and East Chicago Central at historic Block Stadium.

The big event will be a clash with Hammond Academy in the last game of the 2011 Gary Southshore Railcats High School Challenge. The Lions will play at the US Steel Yard, home of the Railcats, on May 10 at 6:00 PM. For more details about the game and how to get tickets, contact the Victory Christian Academy Athletic Director, Derek Chirch, through the school office at 219.548.2701.

The Lions return seven starters and ten total from last year's squad. Senior captain Justin Reisinger (SS-P) will once again anchor the infield with Adam Lange (Jr. - C), Jonathan Walker (So. - 3b) and Austin Thomas (8th - 2b) also returning. In the outfield, Calvin Reisinger (Fr. - CF, P) is returning along with Mac Price (Fr.) and Peter Guess (So.). Newcomer Josh Smith (Fr.) should see significant time at first base this season while the brother tandem of Nick (Sr.) and Luke (So.) Schrader will add pitching depth and speed to the lineup.

Also returning from the 2010 campaign are Evan Duey (Fr. - IF) and Nathan Nichols (8th - OF). The roster is filled out with first year team members Colin Wilson (Jr.), Kyle McNamara (So.), Michael Canzoneri (Fr.), Jacob Pawlicki (Fr.), David Stover (8th) and Hunter Huber (7th).

The Lions are coached by Ryan Bratcher, Paul Walker and Ben Polhemus.
