VCA Baseball Crushed by Bowman Academy 19-1

Gary, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions knew going in that this make up date would test them with seven starters and reserves unavailable, but a late scratch of their starting pitcher for Monday night left the Lions few options.

Peter Guess was called upon to start for the Lions and pitched four innings.  Aside from a wild stretch in the second inning, Guess pitched well enough to help his team.  In the second, nine walks and eight hits allowed Bowman to push 15 runs across the plate.

Offensively, the Lions could not get anything going, scratching out only two hits on the evening.

Mac Price pitched a scoreless fourth inning for the Lions.

The Lions next play Tuesday evening at 6 PM in the Railcats High School Challenge vs. Hammond Academy of Science and Technology.

VCA Baseball Escapes With 9-8 Win over Covenant Christian

DeMotte, IN - On an afternoon where there were thunderstorms just a few miles to the north, the Victory Christian Academy Lions edged out the Covenant Christian Knights 9-8 under relatively calm skies.

Luke Schrader took the hill for the Lions (7-5) and pitched four solid innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out three.  Calvin Reisinger (4-0) picked up the win for the Lions, holding the Knights to three runs, two earned in the final three frames.

Calvin Reisinger set the tone early by sending a deep drive to left center for a lead off triple in the first inning as the Lions scored single runs in each of the first four innings.  The Knights were able to answer, by tallying a single run in the first and two runs each in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-4 lead.  The Lions threatened to break things open several times early, striking the ball well, but solid defense by the Knights limited the damage the Lions would inflict.

In the top of the fifth, the Lions would push two more across the plate on singles by Peter Guess and Evan Longhi and a line shot off of the bat of Jon Walker that was misplayed by the Knights' left fielder to take a 6-5 lead.  Again, the Knights were able to answer, scoring two runs in their half of the inning without recording a single hit leaving the score after five innings at 7-6 Knights.

In the sixth, Adam Lange led off getting hit by the pitcher.  Justing Reisinger singled and Peter Guess reached first safely on an error allowing Lange to score.  Evan Longhi then blooped a single into left field scoring Reisinger and Guess.  The Knights would threaten in the sixth, but with two outs and two runners on, Evan Duey would make a diving catch in right field to end the threat.  The Lions' lead was 9-7.

The Knights would score one more run in the seventh, making the final 9-8 Lions.

Evan Longhi had three hits and three RBIs.  Calvin Reisinger, Justin Reisinger and Peter Guess all had three hits and Peter Guess and Jon Walker scored three and two runs respectively for the Lions.

The Lions play next Monday night against Bowman Academy in a game rescheduled from a rainout earlier in the year.

VCA Baseball Dominates Bowman Academy 14-2

Gary, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions traveled to Gary to face the Bowman Academy Eagles on Tuesday night.  These two teams traded wins last year in tightly contested matches.  The Lions expected nothing less this year on a night that was reminiscent of the April game last year with a temperature in the mid 40's and the wind howling in off of Lake Michigan making it feel much colder.  The Lions went on to win that game 12-10 in seven innings.  Unfortunately for the Eagles this year, 0-0 at the start of the game was the closest they would get to the Lions.

The Eagles starter, Pipkins, was wild from the outset of the game, walking the first two batters.  A couple of fielding errors later and the Lions (6-5) had a 3-0 lead.  The Eagles would respond with a run in the bottom of the first off of two singles by Phillips and Moore.

Colin Wilson and Calvin Reisinger led off the 2nd with singles and score on an error and a fielder's choice.  Peter Guess and Justin Reisinger were both knocked in by Nick Schrader's long single to center field.  Two more runs would be plated before the inning was over, leaving the Lions with a 9-1 lead.

Both teams failed to score in the 3rd inning, but VCA came up big again with four more in the 4th.  The big hit was a two run double by Calvin Reisinger.  The Lions had the game well in control at 13-1.

The Eagles managed to work a run across the plate on a walk, two stolen bases and a balk in the bottom of the 4th.

The Lions would add one more run in the 5th making the final score 14-2.

Pipkin pitched a complete game for the Eagles giving up eleven earned runs on seven hits and five walks.  He also struck out five and hit on batter.

Luke Schrader (1-0) earned the win for the Lions, pitching three strong innings, giving up one run on no hits and three walks.  He struck out five.  Austin Thomas pitched one inning giving up a run on two hits.  Justin Reisinger pitched the final frame for the Lions striking out two.

The Lions next play at Covenant Christian in DeMotte on Saturday at noon.

VCA Baseball Rebounds Against Hammond Academy

Hammond, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions broke their four game losing streak by defeating the Hammond Academy of Science and Technology Hawks by the score of 9-7 Monday evening.

Nick Schrader started for the Lions (5-5), but only lasted eight batters, giving up four runs on two hits and three walks. Calvin Reisinger (3-0) earned the win, pitching five and a third innings allowing three earned runs on four hits and four walks. Justin Reisinger recorded the final four outs for the save.

The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits, including a double. The damage could have been worse, but Justin Reisinger was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple.  The Hawks responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of three walks with two timely hits.

The Lions tallied two more runs on two hits in the top half of the second.  The score remained 6-4 through the third inning.  The Lions would add two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth while the Hawks tallied one in the fourth and two in the sixth for the final score of 9-7.

The Hawks threatened to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, by loading the bases with two outs, but Reisinger got the Hawks' number three hitter, Cody Glass, to hit a soft liner to Austin Thomas at third base.

Calvin Reisinger and Evan Longhi each had three hits for the Lions while Justin Reisinger and Nick Schrader each contributed two hits.

The Lions play next on Tuesday night at Bowman Academy.  Game time is 4:30 and will be played at the IU Northwest baseball field.

VCA Baseball Struggles vs. La Lumiere

LaPorte, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions entered Saturday's double header with the La Lumiere Lakers confident they could compete for a win.  A one run loss earlier in the month at the hands of the Lakers coupled with the fact that the Lakers had not played in two weeks due to weather bolstered those expectations. Instead, the Lions looked like the team that had two weeks of rust from not playing, dropping both games of the double header, 8-0 and 10-0.

Although it was sunny and about 60 degrees at game time, weather definitely played a factor in the outcome.  The wind was blowing in from right field at a sustained 15-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph affecting pop ups and throws.

Austin Thomas (1-3) took the hill for the visiting Lions (4-5) in game one and looked sharp throwing just under 75% of his pitches for strikes.  Thomas gave up eight runs, but only three of them were earned due to the Lions committing nine errors in the field.  Marty Mahoney started for the Lakers and pitched six strong innings allowing no runs on only one hit.  He struck out seven and walked none.  The Lakers Friedman pitched the seventh inning, closing out the game and preserving the shutout.

Offensively, the Lions couldn't get anything going against Mahoney, while the Lakers were taking advantage of every Lions miscue.  Matt Jelinek led the Lakers with two hits, three runs and two RBIs.  The Lions got a scare when Mahoney collided with Jon Walker at the plate in the first inning.  Mahoney was trying to score while Walker reacting to a high throw, leaving him in a vulnerable position.  Walker had the wind knocked out of him and was able to finish the day behind the plate.

Justin Reisinger started game two for the Lions and gave up six earned runs on six hits.  He struck out five and walked five.  Calvin Reisinger pitched the final inning for the Lions and gave up four runs on two hits and two walks.  Anton Kobe pitched a complete game no-hitter for the Lakers, only allowing three runners on base.  He struck out four and walked one.

Matt Jelinek again led the Lakers with three hits and three runs.  Marty Mahoney had two hits and scored twice, while Benz Culbertson, Zach Wisniewski and Anton Kobe each singled once in the game.

The Lions next game is against the Hammond Academy of Science and Technology on Monday, May 2 at Riverside Park just off of 80/94 and Calumet in Hammond.  Game time is at 5 PM.

Lions Baseball Drops Two to Kouts

Kouts, IN - The Victory Christian Academy Lions were anxious to get back on the field Saturday after weather postponed four games over the previous ten days.  Unfortunately, sloppy defense, inconsistent pitching and dead bats doomed the Lions to two identical ten run defeats at the hands of the host Kouts Mustangs.

Austin Thomas (1-2) started game one for the Lions (4-3), pitched four innings giving up eleven earned runs on ten hits while walking 5 and striking out two.  Max Everaert went the distance for the Mustangs (7-6), pitching five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.  Everaert also struck out eight and hit a batter.

The Lions opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning off of hits from Austin Thomas and Nick Schrader.  Kouts took advantage of early wildness from Thomas and miscues from the Lions defense to post four runs in the bottom half of the first on just a single hit.  That would be all Kouts would need as they limited the Lions to one more run in the third inning while posting eight runs in their half of the next three innings for the final tally of 12-2.

Jake Keough had a double and two singles, scored two runs and knocked in one while Andrew Birky had two hits and three RBI for the Mustangs.

Austin Thomas and Calvin Reisinger each scored for the Lions.  Thomas also had two of the Lions four hits.

The Lions looked to rebound in game two of the double header with the Mustangs' ace done for the day.  Things looked promising at first with the Lions and Mustangs fighting to a 2-2 tie through three innings.  The Mustangs added two additional runs in the fourth taking a 4-2 lead.  Matt Morgart and Lance Basso ignited a five run barrage with back to back home runs to start their half of the fifth inning.  Kouts added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out Lions with the final tally of 12-2.

Justin Reisinger started and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs off of eleven hits, striking out three and walking two.  Nick Schrader and Evan Longhi pitched the final inning and a third, combining to allow three runs off of two hits.

Jon Frame started for the Mustangs and gave up the Lions two runs.  Andrew Birky pitched three shutout inning for the win and Jake Moore pitched a scoreless sixth to close things out for the Mustangs.

Morgart and Basso each had two hits, including a home run.  Keough, Everaert, Roney and Taylor also added two hits each for the Mustangs.
